Web Development Services

Web Technology Services provides web site development services to all UI departments.

Our service is based on a mentor/student model in which student web designers perform the majority of design work under the supervision of full-time staff.  This model involves recruiting students with an interest in pursuing careers in IT and/or web design and affords them a unique opportunity to fully participate in and gain real-world experience while engaging in all facets of a web design project; from initial consultation with the client, throughout the design process and any support required after site launch.

Our approach to web design encompasses a universal design philosophy wherein our goal is to have all sites we create conform to current web standards as defined by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium - http://www.w3.org) and Section 508 (http://www.section508.gov). Our sites also incorporate and conform to all UI web content and graphics standards (http://www.uiowa.edu/graphics/web_standards) as well as any content/design standards that may be required by a department, college or unit.

Structurally, all of our sites are designed with the intent that they will be maintained by the client using Macromedia Contribute (see more information at:  http://cs.its.uiowa.edu/wts/applangsupport.shtml) and are created by leveraging Dreamweaver templates incorporating design elements based on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and valid HTML 4.01 code and leverage Server Side Includes (SSI's) to maximize site efficiency and minimize page size.  In total, these design elements result in lightweight sites that are easily edited, maintained and updated by clients with little to no web experience using Contribute.
