Treo 700w

The Treo 700 is a mid-range device that is small but offers screen touch navigation and a QWERTY keyboard. The 700w runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and uses ActiveSync to sync with the Hawkmail server.  The 700w is available from Verizon.

Quick Start Guide: How to Setup Your Treo 700w to Synchronize Your Email and Calendar Using ActiveSync

The 700w runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and uses ActiveSync to synchronize e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks wirelessly with the Hawkmail server.

How to set up ActiveSync directly on the 700W:

NOTE:  These instructions are intended for Iowa domain Hawkmail users.  If you connect to an Exchange server on a different domain, please contact your IT support person for instructions.

  1. Press Start , then select Programs

  2. Select ActiveSync

  3. Press Menu and select Configure Server

  4. Under "Server address :" enter email.uiowa.edu, check "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" and click Next

  5. Under "Edit Server Settings " in the "User name:" field enter your Hawk ID
In the "Password:" field enter your Hawk ID password
In the "Domain:" field enter iowa
    Check Save password *
    Click Next

*Warning--while providing convenient access by not having to enter your password on each synchronization, if you lose your device, this will allow access to your data

  6. Check the boxes next to the Outlook components you want to sync from the Hawkmail server. We recommend leaving all these boxes checked so that you get the most out of your syncs when you're away from your desk.  Click on Settings... to modify the default settings.  Then select Finish.

What is ActiveSync?

ActiveSync on your PDA phone (Smart Phone) allows you to directly download your email and calendar from the Hawkmail server without going through your desktop computer. ActiveSync synchronizes directly with the Hawkmail server, not your desktop software (Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook). Visit Hawkmail Calendar and Email from Anywhere: Handheld Devices: PDAs - Personal Digital Assistants and Smart Phones for a detailed discussion of ActiveSync.

Why we recommend the Treo 700w over the Treo 650

We have had significant experience with the Treo 700w. The Treo 700w is a very good device and provides high speed internet access as well as providing wireless access to email. The Treo 700w smartphone is the first Windows Mobile device built around the Palm experience.  Where the Treo 700w is superior to the 650 has do to with the 700’s support of ActiveSync, Windows Mobile Direct Push Technology, and EvDO.
