More flip phone than PDA, this device is shipped with ActiveSync and will easily talk to the University of Iowa front-end Hawkmail service. This will enable the syncing of email, calendar and contacts over the Verizon Wireless data network.

How to set up ActiveSync directly on the Samsung i730 Smartphone:
NOTE: These instructions are intended for Iowa domain Hawkmail users. If you connect to an Exchange server on a different domain, please contact your IT support person for instructions.
- Go to the Start Menu.
- Click ActiveSync.
- Click Tools | Options .
- Click the Server tab.
- Under Sync with this server:, enter the server name of email.uiowa.edu
- Check the box next to This server uses an SSL connection
- Click Options...
- Under the Server Logon Credential screen, enter your Hawk ID, password, and Domain.
- Click OK in the upper right-hand corner to back out to the Server Synchronization screen.
- Under Sync these items:, select Calendar and click Options. Verify information you want to synchronize. Click OK to back out to the Server Synhronization screen.
- Repeat the process in #10 for Inbox settings. Note: There are no setting options available for Contacts.
- Click the Mobile Schedule tab.
- Select preference for synchronization during Peak times, Off-peak times, and Roaming. Please note, increasing the rate of synchronization may increase the rate that the battery loses its charge.
How to set up ActiveSync from your desktop:
- Install ActiveSync from the CD provided with your phone.
Click Tools | Options
- Check all items you wish to sync (e.g., Contacts, Calendar, E-mail, Tasks). Then click the Settings... button.

- In the "Server Address:" field enter email.uiowa.edu
Check "This server requires an encyrpted (SSL) connection"
In the "User name:" field enter your Hawk ID
In the "Password:" field enter your Hawk ID password.
In the "Domain:" field enter iowa
Check "Save Password"
Click OK.
ActiveSync on your PDA phone (Smart Phone) allows you to directly download your email and calendar from the Hawkmail server without going through your desktop computer. ActiveSync synchronizes directly with the Hawkmail server, not your desktop software (Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook).
