Configuring a New Hawkmail Account for Outlook Anywhere

Note:  You may receive a prompt ("Allow this website to configure...") when configuring the account or retrieving free/busy info.  Select Don't ask me about this website again and click Allow.

If you have not configured your Hawkmail account in Outlook 2007 on your computer, start with the directions below. If you have already set up your Hawkmail account, see Configuring a Previously Created Account.

1.  Open your control panel by clicking Start then Control Panel (Windows XP) or the Windows icon and Control Panel (Windows Vista).

  • If you are using Category View, click User Accounts and then choose the Mail icon.
  • If you are using Classic View, double-click the Mail icon.

2.  Click the E-mail Accounts… button

3.  Select New

4.  Check Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next

5.  Select Microsoft Exchange and click Next

6.  Add the settings for your account:

  • In the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type IOWAEVS02.iowa.uiowa.edu (NOTE:  depending on which Hawkmail server your account resides, this may change to IOWAEVS04.iowa.uiowa.edu)
  • Place a check in Use Cached Exchange Mode
  • Type your Hawk ID in the User Name box (Do not type domain/HAWKID)
  • Click Check Name
  • Click More Settings

 

7.  Add the following advanced settings:

  • Click the Connection tab and in the Outlook Anywhere section, place a check in the box Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP.
  • Click the button Exchange Proxy Settings…
  • In the box Use this URL to connect… type email.uiowa.edu
  • Place a check in the boxes Connect using SSL Only and Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate
  • In the box beneath Only connect..., type msstd:email.uiowa.edu
  • Check the box On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP, if on a cable modem or DLS.
    (If you have problems connecting with On fast networks checked, try checking the box On slow networks.)
  • In the drop-down menu under Proxy authentication settings, select Basic Authentication.

8.  Click OK and then OK again to return to the Microsoft Exchange Server Settings screen

9.  Click Check Name

Note: The dialog may search for several minutes. Be patient! If prompted, enter your domain\Hawk ID and password (if you are unsure of your domain, look up your Hawk ID and domain here) using the following format:

domain\hawkid

For example: iowa\herky

10. Click the Next button.

11.  Click Finish.

12. Click Close to complete the setup.

 

Configuring a Previously Created Account

1.  Open Outlook and click on Tools then Accounts Settings

2.  Select your Hawkmail account and click Change

3.  Make sure that the box is checked for Use Cached Exchange Mode

4.  Click More Settings

5.  Add the following advanced settings:

  • Click the Connection tab and place a check in the Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP box.
  • Click the button Exchange Proxy Settings…
  • In the box Use this URL to connect… type in email.uiowa.edu
  • Place a check in the boxes Connect using SSL only and Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate
  • In the box beneath Only connent..., type msstd:email.uiowa.edu
  • Check the box On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP, if on a cable modem or DLS.
    (If you have problems connecting with On fast networks checked, try checking the box On slow networks.)
  • In the drop down menu under Proxy authentication settings, select Basic Authentication.

6.  Click OK and then OK again to return to the Exchange Server Settings screen and click the Next button.

7.  Click Finish.

8.  Click Close to complete the setup.
