Synching your iPhone/iPod Touch using ActiveSync

Healthcare users:  please see the Healthcare iPhone/iPod Touch page for instructions on setting up your device

Note: Before configuring your iPhone or iPod Touch for UI Wireless, you must have at least version 2.0 of the operating system software.

Verify that your iPhone/iPod device’s software has been updated to version 2.0 or higher . You may do this on your device by opening Settings > General > About. Under Version it will state the version number of the software your device is currently running. If it does not say 2.0 or higher , follow the instructions below.

  • iPhone owners: Connect your device to iTunes and update to the latest version before proceeding.
  • iPod Touch owners: Apple charges a nominal fee ($10) to upgrade to version 2.0. If you wish to connect to UI Wireless, you will need to purchase and install this update from Apple through iTunes.
  • Version 3.0 is also now available for a fee.

Once you have verified that you have version 2.0 or higher installed, you are ready to proceed.

Note: If you had your device configured to connect to Hawkmail using IMAP, do the following before configuring your device to connect to Hawkmail ActiveSync to prevent duplicate e-mails and conflicts:

  • Open Settings
  • Choose Mail, Contacts, and Calendar
  • Select your Hawkmail account (it should show up as your University e-mail address)
  • Scroll to the bottom and select Delete Account
  • Confirm that you want to delete your account when prompted.

Once you have verified that you have version 2.0 or higher and that you have deleted any previously configured Hawkmail using IMAP accounts, you are ready to proceed.

  • Open Settings

  • Choose Mail, Contacts, and Calendar

  • Choose Add Account…

  • Select Microsoft Exchange

  • Touch Email and enter your University e-mail alias address (for example, jane-doe@uiowa.edu)
NOTE: Do not enter your target address (for example, jdoe@iowa.uiowa.edu).  This will cause an issue with Calendar appointments which are already on your calendar.  They will appear as if they are new events for which you need to select Accept, Maybe, or Decline.
Version 2.0

Version 3.0 or higher

  • Version 2.0 : Touch Username and enter Iowa\YourHawkID (for example, Iowa\jdoe)
  • Version 3.0 or higher: Touch Domain and enter IOWA
then touch Username and enter your HawkID
  • Touch Password and enter your Hawk ID password
  • Press Next

At this point, your account will be verified.  After the verification process has completed, you will notice that a new field called Server appears underneath Email.  Verify that it says email.uiowa.edu and press Next.

You should now see this screen.

This screen allows you to choose which aspects of your Hawkmail account are synched with your device.  Mail, by default, is On.  You have the option of synchronizing your contacts and calendar as well, and may do so by choosing On for them as well.  After you have made your selections, press Save to finalize your Hawkmail ActiveSync setup.

You may now open the Mail application and use your device to access your Hawkmail account.
