Syncing Your Blackberry with Hawkmail

NOTE:  Currently this service is available to only Faculty & Staff on the Hawkmail server (Iowa domain).

NOTE:  Please see Blackberry Known Issues & FAQs before you proceed.

NOTE:  Any questions should be directed to ITS Help Desk @ 384-HELP.

To activate Blackberry Service for your Hawkmail account you must do the following:

1. Verify that the Blackberry data plan with your service provider includes the Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) option. On your Blackberry, press the Blackberry menu button then select Options | Advanced Options. You should see an option for Enterprise Activation. If you do not see Enterprise Activation, you do not have the correct service plan. Call your provider and ask them to add Blackberry Enterprise Services. If they say you have it, ask them to humor you and try adding it again or pushing it to your phone again. You should see Enterprise Activation show up within minutes of them doing this.

2. Send a one-time setup fee payment of $99 for Enterprise Activation to Deb Sabers, Business Manager, ITS, 2800 UCC.  This payment can be done through a departmental requisition or personal check made payable to The University of Iowa. If you are doing a personal payment, you will need to send a letter or email stating that you want to use this service and will be paying the fee yourself. Please include your University ID for validation of eligibility.

Note:  If you are currently getting your UI Hawkmail email on your Blackberry device (BIS) (Blackberry Internet Services) via your cell phone carrier (e.g., Verizon) you will need to:

- Go to E-mail Settings on your Blackberry device, choose Email accounts and delete your UI Hawkmail account.  Otherwise, you will get duplicate messages.

3. Once payment has been made we will contact you for a time to move your mailbox to the Blackberry storage area. Your mailbox will be unavailable for approximately 20 minutes while this happens and you will need to have your email application closed.

4. You will get the Enterprise Activation Password sent to you via email.

5. On the Blackberry Device, choose Options | Advanced Options | Enterprise Activation

6. Email: enter your email address: jane-doe@uiowa.edu AND Password: type in the Activation password provided by the Blackberry BES administrator. This is not your HawkID password.

7. Press the Blackberry menu button and select Activate.

8. You will see the following: Verifying Encryption, Waiting for Service, Your email address jane-doe@uiowa.edu is now activated.

Note:  For security purposes, the activation password becomes invalid after five unsuccessful activation attempts. The activation password is also only valid for 48 hours. If not used within this time frame, the password will automatically expire.
