How to Open a Hawkmail Account

The University of Iowa offers e-mail accounts for students and faculty and staff.

Students

Students can apply for a no-charge e-mail account through ISIS, the student on-line registration system.

  1. Launch a web browser and type http://isis.uiowa.edu
  2. Type your Hawk ID and Hawk ID Password, and click the “Sign In” button. (Your Hawk ID Password is initially generated when you are admitted to the university). If you are a current student and you have forgotten, or don’t know, your Hawk ID Password, launch a web browser and type http://hawkid.uiowa.edu for help or contact either of the locations below.

  3. Click on the “My UIowa” link.
  4. Click on the “My Email” link.
  5. Click on “Request Email Account”.
  6. You will see:  
    Your Hawkmail (OWA) E-mail account is being created. This usually takes about 15 minutes (it could be longer depending on volume of requests).


    To access your e-mail account use your Hawk ID <hawkid> and Hawk ID Password.

    Your e-mail alias is <email-alias>. This is the e-mail address that you should give to people!

  7. Click on the “LOGOUT” button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
  8. Exit your web browser.


When sharing your e-mail address with others, we strongly encourage you to use the alias (NOT your routing e-mail address).

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff may obtain e-mail accounts for home and/or office use. In either case, apply for an e-mail account here.
