Configuring LDAP to Search for Campus Phone Numbers or Addresses

Searching with LDAP

Note: If you are running Eudora version 3.x or 4.x, upgrade to Eudora 5.1 before you configure LDAP.

Configuring Eudora to use LDAP

  1. Choose Tools | Directory Services.
  2. If you see "White Pages University of Iowa" listed under "Configured Servers", click to check the "White Pages" box and de-select the checked box next to "UIowaPh". Skip to Searching with LDAP.
  3. If "White Pages University of Iowa" is NOT listed, select LDAP in the "Protocols" window and click on the New Database button.

  4. Click on the Network tab and type White Pages University of Iowa in the server name field.
  5. In the "Host Name" field type: directory.uiowa.edu
  6. In the "Port" field type: 389
  7. Click on the Attributes tab.

  8. Click on the Add button.
  9. In the "Attribute Name" field type: TelephoneNumber
  10. In the "Presented As" field, click on the pull-down menu and select Phone(w) from the list.
  11. You may set additional attributes. Click OK when you are finished.
  12. Click on the Search Options tab.
  13. In the "Search Base" field type: ou=people,dc=metadirectory,dc=iowa,dc=uiowa,dc=edu and click OK.
  14. If you would like to be able to search for aliases as well as names, you can add a search filter to the "Whole-query Search Filter" field: (uiowamailalias=*^0*)
  15. In the Databases section, click the box in front of "White Pages University of Iowa" to select it.
    Note: De-select UIowaPh so that the query will only check one database.

    Note: If you follow steps 3 thru 15 to add a new LDAP database, but when you exit Eudora the database is not saved, you need to apply EraseLDAP.reg. Click on the EraseLDAP.reg link to download the file to your hard drive, be sure to exit Eudora, and then double-click on the EraseLDAP.reg file to apply it. When you launch Eudora the next time, "White Pages University of Iowa" will be selected under Configured Servers.

Configuring LDAP to Search for Campus Phone Numbers or Addresses

  1. Choose Tools | Directory Services.
  2. Select LDAP in the "Protocols" window and click on the New Database button.

  3. Click on the Network tab and type Phone Number Search (or Address Search) in the server name field.
  4. In the "Host Name" field type: directory.uiowa.edu
  5. Click on the Search Options tab.
  6. In the "Search Base" field type: ou=people,dc=metadirectory,dc=iowa,dc=uiowa,dc=edu
  7. To seach for campus phone numbers, in the "Word-wise Search Filter" field type: (uiowaofficephone=*^0*) and click OK.
    Note: If you want to search for campus addresses instead, type: (uiowacampuspostaladdress=*^0*)
  8. In the "Databases" section, click the box in front of "Phone Number Search" or "Address Search" to select it.
    Note: When you search for a phone number, leave out the "-" character — e.g., type: 335 9999

Searching With LDAP

  1. Choose Tools | Directory Services
  2. Type your search criteria in the "Query" field and click the Start button. Note: You can use wildcards with name or alias searches, e.g., j* doe or j*-doe
