Moving Windows Eudora Mailboxes, Address Books, etc. to a Macintosh
Preliminary Information
Eudora installs 2 folders on your Macintosh—the "Eudora Application Folder" contains the program itself and the "Eudora Folder" contains your Eudora data files (mailboxes, address books, attachments, etc.) Locate the Eudora Folder—which is usually in the Documents folder (Mac Classic) or the Users : username : Documents folder (Mac OS X). You will need to copy the data files from your Windows computer to the Eudora Folder on your Macintosh—NOT to the Eudora Application Folder.
Installation: Install the CRLF 1.2 application on your Mac Desktop. This program converts the end-of-line characters in each mailbox, address book, etc., which is necessary in order to move from the Windows platform to the Macintosh OS 9.x platform.
Converting the Mailboxes
- On your Windows computer, locate and copy the mailboxes (.mbx files) and/or folders (.fol folders) to diskette (or CD) or send them to yourself as attachments and open them in Mac Eudora. If you decide to e-mail the files, before you attach any .mbx or .txt files, select Tools | Options | Attachments and de-select "Put text attachments in body of message". Note: Do not copy the .toc files.
- Create a "transfer" folder on your Mac Desktop and copy the .mbx files to the folder.
- Drag & drop each of the mailbox files on the CRLF 1.2 application. (If you have mailboxes in folders, open each of the folders and drag & drop the mailboxes located within the folders.) CRLF will convert the end-of-line characters and write them back to the same location, e.g., to the "transfer" folder.
- Remove the extensions from the .mbx files (e.g., "In.mbx" becomes "In"). You can also remove the .fol extension from any folders. Move the mailbox files (and any folders containing mailboxes) to the Eudora Folder : Mail Folder. The mailboxes (and folders) will display in the Eudora mailboxes window the next time you launch Eudora—however, status (read, unread, sent, forwarded, etc.) and label information will be lost.
Converting Address Books
- On your Windows computer , locate the NNdbase.txt file in the Eudora directory, and copy it to diskette (or CD) or e-mail it to yourself and open it in Mac Eudora, as you did the with mailbox files. On the Macintosh, rename the NNdbase.txt file to Eudora Nicknames.
- Drop Eudora Nicknames on the CRLF application and then move it to the Eudora Folder.
- If your Windows Eudora directory contains a folder called Nickname (and there are address books in it), copy the *.txt files to diskette (or CD) or e-mail the addressbook.txt files to yourself. Look for a folder called Nicknames Folder in the Eudora Folder on your Macintosh. If you don't have one, create a Nicknames Folder. Remove the ".txt" extension from each address book.
- Drag & drop each addressbook file on the CRLF application, and then move them to the Eudora Folder : Nicknames Folder.
Converting Filters
- If you created filters in Windows Eudora, locate and copy the Filters.pce file to diskette (or CD) or e-mail it to yourself and open it in Mac Eudora. Rename the Filters.pce file to Eudora Filters.
- Drag & drop the file on the CRLF application, and then move it to the Eudora Folder.
Attachments
Note: You do not need to convert the documents in your Eudora "attach" folder. Simply copy the documents from your "attach" folder to the Attachments Folder on your Macintosh. Any messages which originally contained any attachmend will not retain the link to the attachment, but you can still access the attachment by opening the Attachments Folder.
Installation: Download and install the EditPad Lite application to your Windows machine. You can download the program from http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html.
Converting the Mailboxes
- On your Windows computer, locate and the mailboxes (.mbx files). From EditPad Lite, open each individual mbx file. Select File | Save As, choose Save as type Text Document (.txt), remove .mbx from the file name and click the Save button. E-mail the .txt files to yourself as attachments using Eudora.
NOTES:
- If you do not see the .mbx extension on the Windows computer, you will need unhide extensions. On Windows XP: Open Windows Explorer and select Tools | Folder Options | View and under Files and Folders, deselect "Hide extensions for known file types."
- Before you attach any .mbx or .txt files in Eudora, select Tools | Options | Attachments and de-select "Put text attachments in body of message."
- Do not copy the .toc files.
- On the Mac, create a folder on the Desktop called "Transfer." Open the e-mail message in Mac Eudora. Open the message(s) and drag the attachment(s) to the Transfer folder.
Open the Transfer folder and perform a Get Info on each txt file. Under Name & Extension, remove .txt from the file name.
Copy files into the Mail Folder (e.g., Macintosh HD | Documents | Eudora Folder | Mail Folder).
- Open Eudora and select Mailbox | Other and browse to the the Mail Folder. Select the text file you just renamed. Select Choose.
- Close out and reopen Eudora. The extra mailboxes will now show up under the Mailboxes menu.
- Highlight Eudora Nicknames and select File | Get Info. Click on the arrow in front of "Name & Extension". If the file contains a ".txt" extension, remove it and then move the file to the Eudora Folder.
- Highlight each addressbook file and select File | Get Info. Click on the arrow in front of "Name & Extension". If the file still contains a ".txt" extension, remove it. Move the addressbook files to the Eudora Folder : Nicknames Folder.
Converting Filters
- If you created filters in Windows Eudora, locate and copy the Filters.pce file to diskette (or CD) or e-mail it to yourself and open it in Mac Eudora. Rename the Filters.pce file to Eudora Filters.
- Highlight Eudora Filters and select File | Get Info. Click on the arrow in front of "Name & Extension". If the file contains a ".txt" extension, remove it and then move the file to the Eudora Folder.
