Electronic Communications Review (July 2005)

Email Communications Core Team Charge

Step 1. Identify current and future requirements for Student Electronic Communication especially in the area of email. Educate the faculty and staff about the “domino effect”, i.e., that changes in the student email infrastructure could have direct impact on their email and/or calendar system.  Suggested methodology includes, but is not limited to, meeting with stakeholders; holding open forums and focus groups; surveying faculty, staff and students; and sponsoring a small pilot project to compare possible email clients.  Involve the advisory teams listed above during the entire process.

Step 2. Identify a solution or solutions that fit the requirements, and quantify each solution's strengths and weaknesses including Total Cost of Ownership. Discuss the potential solution(s) with the various advisory teams.

Step 3. Using the information obtained in steps 1 and 2, make a final recommendation for changes and enhancements to or complete replacement of the student email infrastructure.  Include a high level migration plan.

Increased Security when Checking Mail on Blue (June 2005)

Beginning June 7, SSL is required when you connect to Blue to check mail.  This increases security when checking mail by using Secure Sockets (SSL) in your e-mail client.  SSL encrypts your password and also encrypts incoming e-mail messages.

Note:  Do not set SSL for sending e-mail.

Webmail uses SSL so you can continue to use that if needed.
