Assistive Technology Online Resources
The Assistive Technology Office at the University of Iowa has compiled this list of resources both at the U of I and external to the university in order to help you learn more about AT, accessible web design and also to help locate other disability resources.
Campus Resources
- Student Disability Services - SDS handles all disability issues concerning students at the U of I.
- Faculty Staff Disability Services - FSDS is the first point of contact for all faculty, staff and visitors requiring accomodations at the university.
- Office of Affirmative Action - The OAA offers access to information and resources related to University's affirmative action program, including disability resources.
- Council on Disability Awareness - The CDA is a group of students, faculty, staff, and citizens who are working to encourage the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life at the U of I.
- UI Law, Health, Policy and Disability Center - This group is "an emerging leader in law, technology, education and research, focused on improving the quality of life for person living with disabilities."
- UI Disability Resources List - This is an alternative list of campus disabilities resources.
- Iowa Center for Assistive Technology and Educational Resources - ICATER, located within the College of Education, offers a place for the advancement and dissemination of assistive technology.
- University of Iowa Libraries Services to Library User's with Disabilities - The U of I library system offers a variety of resources to library visitors with accomodation needs.
- Iowa Program for Assistive Technology - IPAT works with consumers, family members, service providers, and state and local agencies/organizations to promote assistive technology through awareness, training, and policy work.
- Center for Disabilities and Development - The CDD is Iowa's premier facility for persons with disabilities and special needs, providing medical care, training, research, and information sharing.
External AT Resources
- Equal Access to Software and Information - EASI provides online accessibility training and consulting with a specific slant towards the higher education market.
- AbilityHub - AbilityHub provides links and information on most every category of AT equipment on the market, including links to vendors of such equipment.
- Closing the Gap - Closing the gap covers assistive technology with a particular look at its educational and vocational implications.
- U.S. Dept. of Education Office of Civil Rights - The OCR oversees the application of sections 504 and 508 of the Americans with Disabities Act in the educational arena.
- RIT TTY Guide - RIT's handy guide to using a TTY for those new or unfamiliar with using such products.
Accessible Web Design Resources
- Bobby - Bobby tests web pages for Section 508 accessibilities issues and notes discrepencies on a line by line basis. Excellent for checking the accessibility of your web site.
- WEBAIM - WEBAIM presents a great array of information concerning web development with accessibility in mind.
- W3 Web Accessibility Initiative - WAI, a subset of the World Wide Web consortium has an excellent group of checklists concerning universally accessible web design.
